A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served from 1957-1960 and was a member of the Bunker Hill American Legion. He also was a member of the Bethalto Knights of Columbus, 4th degree. He retired in 1998 after 21 years as a brickmason for Shell Oil Co. Later he drove the bus for the Bethalto Senior Citizens Center.
In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Letha and Patrick Costello of Metamora, Ill.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Jerry Jr. and Roberta Allen of Rosewood Heights and Terry and Cathy Allen of Bethalto; 10 grandchildren, Kyle Costello and his wife Jessica, Timothy, Jonathan, Olivia, Lily and Christian Costello, Christopher Allen and his fiancée Vanessa Hart, and Aaron, Leah and Sam Allen; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Brian Ogle of Roxana and Linda and Ed Andrus of Wood River; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Robin Allen of Norman, Okla.; and a brother-in-law Harold Pratt of East Alton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Barbara Pratt.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father George Radosedich at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Staunton. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near Bunker Hill, with military honors by the Bunker Hill American Legion.
