William F. Bast I, 62, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.
Born May 9, 1947 in Highland, Ill., he was the son of Fred P. and Edna M. (Clawson) Bast.
He married Gay Ann Tulgetske May 16, 1976 in Edwardsville. She survives.
William was a sergeant with the Edwardsville Police Dept. for 27 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the East Alton American Legion, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 794, holding offices of Historian and Sergeant-at-Arms. Besides enjoying his life with family, his greatest passion were the many friends he made after moving to East Alton in 2001. These friends he also called family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William F. Bast II and Laura and their sons Ben and Josh, and Bill's first wife Lynda (Barnette) Love, all of Mississippi; his daughter and son-in-law Melissa A. and Jason Abernathy and their children Bailey, Jason and Connor, all of East Alton; his adopted daughters Lori Reynolds and Christy Basden and his adopted son Bobby Basden, all of East Alton; his two aunts, Cecelia and Nancy Clawson; cousins Trudy Snell and Mary Lou Harkell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathi McMichael.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 12 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights from 10 a.m. until time of services at noon. Chaplain Bruce Baumberger will officiate. Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to BJC Hospice in William's name.
