William C. Smith, 87, passed away at 5:45 am, Friday September 25, 2009 at St. Anthony's Health Center.

He was born on March 28, 1922 in Alton, the son of Oscar D. Smith and Rose Swan Smith Bond.

He married the former Wilma L. Heck on April 13, 1947 in Wood River she survives.

William was a steel worker for the Shampaine Industries in St. Louis for over 40 years. He served our country in WWll as a Telecommunication Operator in the Pacific. He was an outdoorsman and loved working in his yard and his hobby was carpentry.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and their husbands Rose and Gene Stumpf of Batchtown, IL, Cathy and Joe Easley of Elsah, IL, two sons and their wives Jim and Debbie Smith of Smithton, IL, Chuck and Denise Smith of Springfield, IL, eleven grandchildren Paula and Gene Howell, Deb and Ron Newman, Jerry Stumpf and Tonya Brown, Sherry and Tony Millitello, Cathy Jo Snyders and Dave Dean, Lori Ann and Tim Schmittle, Lisa and Rob Schulte, Bob and Jessi Smith, Eric and Sonya Smith, Jessica Smith, Clayton Smith, fourteen great grandchildren, one brother Jerome Smith of Bethalto and many nieces and nephews

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers James and Paul Smith and one great grandson Dylan Howell.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 am Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Elias Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey. Where funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Thursday, October 1, 2009 with the Rev. Glen Greenwood officiating.

The Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team will accord military Rites, burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, IL.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association.
