William Bunt

Shipman |

William “Bill” R. Bunt of Shipman, passed away on June 23, 2014, at the age of 99 years after a brief illness.

He was born on August 26, 1914, on the family farm located north of Shipman, Illinois. As a child, Bill waved at Charles Lindbergh’s airplane when Lindbergh flew his airmail route over the Bunt family farm.

Bill married Viola Rhodes on August 26, 1939. In addition to his wife, Bill’s four brothers (Albert, Chester, Robert, Floyd) and four sisters (Ellen, Stella, Nellie, Velma) all preceded him in death.

He is survived by his four sons and daughters-in-law; Tom and Cathy of Roxton, TX, Ed and Cheryl of New London, IA, Doug and Billie of Shipman, IL, and Tim and Gale of Piasa, IL. He has nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

After graduation from Shipman High School in 1934, Bill worked briefly on the family farm, then obtained work with the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio railroad as a gandy dancer.  After a year with the railroad, Bill was employed by Owens-Illinois Glass Co., retiring 40 years later in 1976.

Visitation will be onThurs., June 26th, 2014 from 4-8pm at Targhetta & Wooldridge  Funeral Home in Shipman, where services will be held on Fri., June 27th, 2014 at 10am Rev Thomas Olney and Rev Roger Barnes will officiate. Burial will be at Miles Station Cemetery in Brighton.

In place of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church of Woodburn.
