William Pohlman

William “Bill” John Pohlman, 87, died at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at his home in Godfrey surrounded by his wife and four children. He will be cherished and loved forever. Born December 25, 1925 in Meppen, IL he was the son of Gerhard and Alice (Kiel) Pohlman. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and served as an usher. Bill was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Alton, the VFW Post 1308, and was very active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Ursuline Convent. He retired from Con Agra in Alton as a supervisor after 37 years of service. He then worked for Rolling Hills Golf Course for 20 years. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid golfer having carded a hole-in-one while golfing in Arizona. He enjoyed coaching his son’s baseball teams and was an avid Chicago Cubs Baseball fan. He always considered Brussels and Calhoun County as “God’s Country.” On April 10, 1948 he married Marjorie E. Roady. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Martha Craner (Ken) of Orange, CA, and Susie Emons (Mike) of Winter Park, FL, two sons, Dr. Thomas Pohlman (Elsie) of Creve Coeur, MO, and John Pohlman (Eileen) of Fremont, CA, nine grandchildren, Cari Dixon, Emily Pohlman, Kelly Craner, Sarah Milunski, Chelsea Emons, Katie Pohlman, Meggie Emons, Will Pohlman, and Eddie Emons, three great grandchildren, Allison and Rachel Dixon, and Andrew Craner, and two brothers, Leonard Pohlman of Godfrey and Ron Pohlman of Brussels. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Pohlman, a granddaughter, Gracie Emons, a brother, Ralph Pohlman, and a sister, Estelle Oseland. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Visitation will continue from 10:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors by the East Alton American Legion #794.
