William B. Fitzgerald Jr., 85, died at 7:32 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born November 29, 1928 in Alton the son of the late William B. and Edna (Spurgeon) Fitzgerald Sr. He worked for Standard Oil for 8 years and retired after 50 years as a carpenter with local #377. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of the Alton American Legion Post 126. On September 30, 1950 in Alton he married Virginia Jeane Mckee and she survives. Also surviving are five children; Ronald Fitzgerald (Janet) of Godfrey, SueEllen Weigel (David) of Smithville, MO, Aaron Fitzgerald (Catherine) of Jerseyville, W. Leonard Fitzgerald (Shelley) of Wood River, IL and Sylvia Fitzgerald-Berry (David) of Alton, 10 grandchildren; Stephen Fitzgerald, Angela Weigel, Lori Weigel, Kelly Dale, Jeffrey, Margaret, William, Gregory, Katelyn and Vanessa Fitzgerald, six great-grandchildren, three brothers; Charles Fitzgerald of Mesa, AZ, Larry Fitzgerald of Mesa, AZ and Keith Fitzgerald of East Alton, two sisters; Karen Hartnett of TN, and Patricia Geidenhagen of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by a grandson; Chad Eric Fitzgerald. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at GENT Funeral Home in Alton. Graveside services will be private at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with Father James Flach officiating. Memorials may be made to the Charity of Choice.
