Willard Franklin Stone, age 92, passed away at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at his home while under the care of BJC Hospice.
He was born on January 26, 1916 in Pittsburg, Illinois, the son of Joel Franklin & Leona Belle (Bainter) Stone.
He married Thelma May on September 20, 1935 in Hillsboro, IL. She passed away on April 2, 2003.
He worked in the railroad department for Shell Oil Company in Wood River until his retirement. He had previously worked in construction, ran Stone's Welding and worked at Pennsylvania Railroad. He played semi-pro baseball and was invited to the St. Louis Cardinals camp and made the team. He was a champion horse shoe pitcher and he loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his children and a daughter-in-law, Jim & Lee Stone of Wood River, Joan Neel of Collinsville and Jesse Stone of Brighton; 7 grandchildren, Jeff & Becca Scott, Jason & Sara Neel, Debra & Dave Reno, James II & Sheryl Stone, Sherri Ashlock, Kelly Manns and Barry Stone and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents & wife.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf in Bethalto.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
