Wilbert L. "Bud" Cordes, 92, born March 13, 1922 in rural Carrollton to Joseph J. and Oma Juanita (Hutchens) Cordes, passed away at 2:35 a.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 with his family at his side in VIP Manor in Wood River.
He graduated East Alton-Wood River Community High school in June of 1940, then joined the navy as an Aviation Cadet in October of 1942. While serving in the navy, he was an amateur boxer and won two boxing championships.
Wilbert married the former Dorothy J. Logan on July 2, 1944 in Wood River. She died June 21, 2014.
At the time of his retirement from Clark Oil in 1984, he was Business Manager for Boilermaker's Lodge #483 and President of Boilermaker's Southern Illinois Industrial Council.
He enjoyed fishing, quail hunting and reading.
Surviving are a son, David J. Cordes of wood River, grandson, Joseph P. Cordes and his wife, Jeanette of California; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Tassinari and her husband Michael, Sr.of East Alton, along with three granddaughters and three great grandchildren; Elizabeth L. (Stolze) Adams, her husband George R. Adams, Jr., anf their children, Margaret Dorothy and George R. Adams, III of Franklin, TN; Kathleen A. Stolze, Stuart Kauhane and their daughter, Naomi Anne of Hawaii; Sarah J. (Stolze) Belmonte and her husband Salvador Belmonte of California.
Wilbert is donating a gift of life to Washington University School of Medicine. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He along with many of his generation will be sorrowfully missed.
