Wayne Campbell

Wayne Dale Campbell, aged 91, peacefully passed away about 1 AM, February 2,

2017 at Integrity Nursing Home in Wood River, IL.

Born March 25, 1925 in Hillsboro, IL, he was the son of the late John William and

Lillie Mae (Callahan) Campbell.

Wayne and the former Ruth Eleanor Weller of Wood River were married on June

23, 1946 in Coffeen, IL and recently celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary.

Wayne enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served as a Petty Officer ABM

Second Class in the Pacific Theater during World War II on board the USS Cabot

aircraft carrier. He served in the Navy again in the Korean War on board another

carrier, the USS Essex. Wayne is a life member of Wood River VFW Post #2859.

He was employed for 32 years as a mechanical maintenance man at the Illinois

Power Plant in Wood River, where he retired in 1987.

Besides his wife, Ruth, Wayne is survived by two sons: Larry (Connie) of St.

Charles, MO and James (Christine) of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren: Kevin

Campbell of Cottleville, MO, Kristen (Alan) Poock of St. Peters, Mo, Elizabeth

(Ben) Woodley of Affton, MO, Laura (Matt) Lange of Chicago, IL, and David

Campbell of St. Louis, MO; and one great grandchild, James Joseph Woodley of

Affton, MO.

Preceding Wayne in death, besides his parents, were his five brothers: Ralph,

Harold, Virgil, Leonard, and John Jr. and his sister, Virginia Huston Howe.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be from 5 PM to 7PM on Wednesday, February

8, 2017 at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River, IL.

Services will be held at Gray Funeral Home at 11 AM on Thursday, February 9,

2017, with Pastor David Rose, of the First United Methodist Church of Wood

River, officiating.

Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery on Rt. 127 in Raymond, IL.

Memorials, in honor of Wayne, may be given to the donor’s choice of charities .
