Wanda Wells

JERSEYVILLE – Wanda L. Wells, 89, passed away peacefully Sunday morning March 12, 2017, at her residence in Jerseyville.

She was born on January 30, 1928 in Williamsville, IL one of seven children born to Roy & Zilpha (Reed) McIntyre.

After her family moved to Jerseyville from Calhoun County in 1936, Wanda attended Jerseyville schools; graduating from Jersey Township High School in 1946. As a teenager, with special permission, she started her working career as a part-time telephone operator after school hours.

On October 27, 1946 she married Richard D. Wells, also of Jerseyville. Together she and Richard shared many wonderful memories together taking summertime vacations, going on camping and fishing trips.

After moving to Alton in the early 1950’s Wanda began a long career as a switchboard operator and secretary for Alton Box Board Company, and finally for Jefferson Smurfit at Alton. She was a talented amateur artist who enjoyed drawing and painting. She spent many years working on tracing family genealogy and loved working with computers when they came along. Always keeping a positive attitude and enjoying life, she made many friends over the years. She and Richard returned to Jerseyville in 2001 to be nearer to family.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William & Connie (Raymond) Wells; two granddaughters, Bethany Wells and Jessica (Wells) Wright, and her husband Timothy; two great-grandsons, Carter and Alex Wright; three sisters-in-law, Ruth McIntyre, Margie McIntyre and Elaine McIntyre; along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Richard Wells on July 29, 2015; three sisters, Mildred McIntyre, Vera Rose and Mary Roach; as well as three brothers, Merle McIntyre, Gerald McIntyre and Orville McIntyre.

In keeping with her wishes, no services are planned and her body has been gifted to the Washington University School of Medicine.

Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice in care of Crawford Funeral Home.

Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
