Walter Joseph Gregory, 79, passed away at 1:18 am on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born on July 24, 1946 in Alton, IL. to Walter Jake and Josephine Victoria (Garvey) Gregory.
He married Carol Ann Karcher on October 11, 1969 in McLeansboro, IL.
He earned his Bachelors degree in Business. Walter worked as a Insurance Agent for Country's Companies Insurance. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he was in the Special Forces - Green Beret. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He enjoyed organic gardening, working outside, and was a avid reader. He enjoyed being a pilot in single engine planes, and hot air balloons. He had a sharp memory and was very smart (to a fault). In his later years he enjoyed playing Santa with Carol playing Mrs. Claus and his granddaughter Joey playing an elf.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Carol; son, Walter Jake Gregory II (Michelle); daughter, Diana Root (Ron); grandchildren, Elena Gregory, Danielle Gregory, Brandon Root (Lydia), Gregory Root, Josephine Root (Joey), Amber Gregory, Autumn Gregory; one great-grandchild, Clara Root; Sisters, Janet Bott (Wayne), Vicki Fitsgerald (Robert), Mary Ellen Landuyt (Don), Kathy Cotter (Dan), Madeline Morgenroth (Dave), Teresa McGinnis (Joe H.); along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Gregory; infant grandchildren, Jake, Martha, Peyton, and Rose.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 12, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Homes - Godfrey, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 10:00 am at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Godfrey, Illinois, with Father Steve Janoski, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Upper Alton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family ask for donation to be made to St. Mary's Catholic School.
