Virgil Lee “Mad Dog” Monroe, 80, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, March 4, 2018 at his home surrounded by those who loved him most. He was born April 23, 1937 in Alton. He retired as a union pipefitter from Illinois American Water Company. He married the love of his life, Margaret L. Testa on July 5, 1958. Margaret preceded him in death on January 10, 2016. Lee visited her grave every day until he fell ill. A very proud former Marine, “Mad Dog” is survived by his three sons and two daughters-in-law: Tony and Cathy Monroe of Brighton, Steven Monroe of Alton, and Joseph and Dr. Stephanie Monroe of Godfrey. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Rebecca Tobin, Stephen Monroe, Ashley Riegert (Michael), Scott Monroe, Karissa Hill (John), Antonio Monroe, Cody Monroe, Bella Monroe and Christian Monroe, and two great grandsons, Thayer and Holden Riegert. Lee was a proud supporter of St. Ambrose and Marquette Catholic High Schools, a car enthusiast, an avid walker and talker, a true friend to all, and took great pride at being a dad, grandfather and great grandfather. He was one of many volunteers from Locals 553 and 555 who helped with the original construction of Gordon Moore Park in Alton. Although “Mad Dog” was a well-earned nickname, he was affectionately known as “Lee-Lee” by his youngest grandkids. There will be a prayer service at 4:30 p.m. followed by visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Father Steven Janoski will officiate.
