Vernon Schaefer

Vernon A. Schaefer, 89, died at 5:55 a.m. Sunday, August 3, 2025 in Jerseyville.

Born August 24, 1935 in Prairietown, IL, Vernon Arthur Schaefer was the son of Arthur & Louise (Dubbelde)Schaefer. Vernon graduated from Edwardsville H.S. in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Roberta (Taul) on November 5, 1955 in Prairetown IL.

Vernon’s first job was with his father hauling milk to Adams Dairy in St. Louis. In 1957 he went on to work at Owens-Illinois Glass Company as a mold maker where he continued until the plant closed in 1992. He and his wife then owned and operated Reflections Antiques from 1993-2017.

Vernon loved refinishing furniture, going to auctions, meeting people and making new friends. While moving from Prairietown to Edwardsville to Godfrey, Vernon was always active in his Lutheran Church. The last years he was an elder and active member at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey. He loved his Lord Jesus and served others.

Vernon will be remembered for his kindness, the stories and jokes he told others, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Along with his parents Vernon was preceded in death by his loving wife, Roberta; his brother-in-law, Bill Eberhart; his brother, Arlin Schaefer; and his son-in-law, Dan Heuer. Surviving are his sister, Mary Eberhart; brother Gerald(Connie) Schaefer; sister-in-law, Sharon Schaefer; children: Deborah Heuer of Fremont NE; Daniel (Susan) Schaefer of Giddings, TX; Ruth Duda of Wichita, KS; Cathryn (Chris) Demeur of Buffalo Grove, IL. ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren from Texas, Colorado, Kansas, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Illinois.

Visitation will be at Gent Funeral Home in Alton from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday August 7th, 2025. Visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday August 8th at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey, where the funeral service will be at 11:00am with Pastor Timothy Appel officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in Godfrey. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church of Godfrey.
