Vernard Dooley

Vernard L. Dooley, 80, passed away 12:05 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 18, 1930, in Alton the son of the late Charles O. and Georgia P. (Graham) Dooley.

He married the former Dolores Douglas on September 5, 1980, in Alton and she survives. Other survivors include his children and their spouses: Arlene and Benjamin Bickett of Alton, Larry Peal of Wood River, Marilyn and Bob Clyde of Alton, Vernard L. "Jay" and Helen Dooley Jr. of Melbourne, Florida, Juli and Jack Harpole of Alton, Joseph and Martha White of Alton, Kelly and Jim Fulkrod of Bethalto, Rebecca and Brian Carter of Alton, two grandchildren: Nicholas, Sarah, a great granddaughter: Meredith, a sister: Nancy Connoyer of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, three brothers and sisters in law: Delmar and Minnie Dooley of Elsah, Illinois, Dale Dooley of Roxana, and Gerald and Brenda Dooley of Indiana.

A veteran of the United States Air Force he retired after 20 years of service. He then went to work at the Ford Plant as an assembly line worker, Owens - Illinois as a machinist, Olin Corp. in the scrap metal division, and retired from McDonnell Douglas in the electrical and radio division. He was a member of Emmanuel Free Methodist Church in Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Steven Dooley, a brother: Ronald Dooley, and a sister: Carolyn Thompson.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, February 4, 2011 at Emmanuel Free Methodist Church, 3993 Fosterburg Road, Alton, Illinois and will continue from 2pm until time of funeral services at 3pm on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Emmanuel Free Methodist Church in Alton. Rev. Mark Scandrett will officiate.

Full military rites will be accorded by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308. Private family burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family.
