Vera Ellen Eckhardt, 76, died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Sunday, August 26 at 8:46 p.m.
Vera was born on April 1, 1942 to Louis and Dorothy (Holzschuh) Hollandsworth in Carpenter, IL. She was a 1960 graduate of Worden High School and married Frank Eckhardt on October 23, 1964 in Carpenter, where they had two daughters and 3 sons.
She worked for Lincoln National Life Insurance Company in St. Louis, MO for 27 years. She worked for Madison County Chronicle as an Editor for 28 years. While working for Madison County Chronicle, she was very active in the Worden community and served on many committees. She loved to read. Enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She and her husband enjoyed camping for many years.
Vera was an active member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Hamel, was the Worden Library Board President, a Worden Village Trustee, and a member of the Worden School Board.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Frank E. Eckhardt, Sr., a grandchild, Cassandra Dawes, and a sister, Shirley A. Dustmann.
Vera is survived by her husband, Frank, four children: Kathy Dawes of Granite City, Brenda (Steve) Root of Granite City, Dennis (Jeanne) Eckhardt of Alhambra, and Scott (Sherry) Eckhardt of Stauton. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Hamel from 8:30 - 11 a.m. on Friday, August 31, immediately followed by the funeral. Rev. Allen J. Reiter will be officiating.
Interment will be at the Worden City Cemetery.
