Thomas Dooley

Thomas V. Dooley, 83, of Alton, IL, left this earth to be with his heavenly father on Saturday morning, December 22, 2018 at 8:30 AM at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab in Hardin, IL.

He was born on July 18, 1935 in St. Louis, MO, and was raised at the Alton Diocese Orphanage until the age of 16, at which time he was raised with love and guidance from his foster family, Cletus and Betty Henkhaus of Godfrey, IL. 

Thomas married Doris Rose at St. Mary's Church in Brussels, IL on September 9, 1961. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2010

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church until it closed; he then became a very active member in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, IL. Thomas was a 4th Degree Knight of the Alton Knights of Columbus. He worked until his retirement at St. Joseph's Hospital and St. Anthony's Hospital for over 25 years. 

One of Thomas' greatest joys was being a mentor to children who were less fortunate. He was involved with the Boy Scouts, Alton Explorer's Club, and was also a grandparent at the William M. Bedell Achievement Resource Center. 

Thomas is survived by his mother, Betty Henkhaus; two sisters, Sue Higgins (Bob) of TN and Mary Harshbarger (Andrew) of Alton, IL; four brothers, Vic Henkhaus (Ann) of Alton, IL; Joe Henkhaus of Godfrey, IL; Dave Henkhaus (Terri) of Godfrey, IL; and Christopher Henkhaus (Julie) of Oxford, MS; 2 special nieces and caregivers, Deborah Wade (Jerome) and Sharon Friedel (Patrick); and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; father, Cletus Henkhaus; a sister, Patricia Wolff; a brother, Dan Henkhaus; and a nephew, Nicholas Warner.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at Staten-Fine Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Brussels, IL.

Memorials may be given to William M. Bedell or for Masses.
