Thomas Imboden

Jerseyville |

Thomas Russell Imboden died peacefully at the home he shared with his wife Sherilyn on Thursday, June 29, 2017 in Jerseyville, IL at the age of 62.

Tom was born on November 30, 1954 in Oakland, CA to Thomas Roy Imboden and Ann Imboden Stanfield.  He grew up in St Louis, MO and attended Riverview Gardens High School, Class of 1974.  Following marriage, Tom graduated from St Louis University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Class of 1978.  He graduated from anesthesia school in Kansas City in 1981.

His career soon took him and his family to Illinois where he spent the majority of his remaining years. As a nurse anesthetist, Tom was continually praised for his bedside skills, compassion and encouragement that caused his patients to feel safe and courageous for their procedures.  Tom truly loved his calling as a caregiver, which flowed over into his friendships.

Tom was a proud and loving father of three.  His greatest joy was found in supporting and cheering his children at their school events, graduations and weddings.  He was their biggest fan and loudest cheerleader. He took great pride in the success each has enjoyed in their careers.  Tom loved his children and he adored his grandchildren.  He was Papa to Thomas Ryan Imboden, Sadie Benjamin, Elliot Imboden, Lyla Imboden and Ripley Benjamin.

Tom was a man of great faith and served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville.  He participated in men’s bible study groups, assisted with church activities and served behind the scenes wherever needed.  He married the church organist Sherilyn Bowers on September 20, 2014.  Their mutual love for music and for the Lord bonded their lives.  His compassion for others often took him to deep prayer, even including family and friends in other states to join in prayer for someone.  His faith gave him peace and he was able to keep a positive outlook as he bravely faced the trials of cancer, blindness and brain tumors.  Tom never ever gave up, always seeking ways to help his family cope with the many difficulties of his treatments and prognosis.

Tom thoroughly enjoyed the sports of baseball, golf and hockey, both playing and watching.  Tom was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, as well as a true-Blues hockey fan!  He played competitively, earning trophies in hockey and golf. Tom also has a Hole in One to his credit!  Tom enjoyed hunting with his sons and riding motorcycles with his brothers.  He was an entertaining storyteller with a great sense of humor; his favorites included parenting his 3 children and many adventures with his 4 siblings.

Tom is survived by his wife Sherilyn (Bowers) Imboden of Jerseyville, IL  and his children, Thomas Ray Imboden and his wife Annie Imboden of Carbondale, IL, Claire Benjamin and her husband Caleb Benjamin of Burbank, CA and Steven Imboden of Nashville, TN.  He is also survived by his mother Ann Stanfield and his four siblings and their spouses:  Dr Ley Imboden-Barnett of Raleigh, NC, Shelley Lee and her husband Mike Lee of Fort Worth, TX and Bob Imboden and his wife Patti Imboden of Saint Peters, MO and his brother Charlie Imboden of Wentzville, MO.  He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, step-son Ryan Turner and his in-laws Floyd and Marilyn Bowers, step-mother Barb Imboden, and of course many, many dear friends and family members.

Visitation will be held from 1pm-4pm, Saturday July 1, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Funeral will be held following the visitation at 4pm, Saturday July 1, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Officiating will be Reverend Brent Meyer.
