Rev. Dr. Charles Taylor Knippel

The Rev. Dr. Charles Taylor Knippel, 91, of East Alton, IL died Mon. July 23, 2018 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL.

Born May 26, 1927 in Beaumont, TX, he was the son of Arthur Henry and Dottie Lois (Johnson) Knippel.

Dr. Knippel retired in 1992 from full time ministry as a pastor of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.  During thirty-nine years of ministry he served parishes in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Missouri.  As a staff pastor with the Lutheran Ministries Association of Metropolitan St. Louis from 1968 to 1976, he developed at a ministry in the field of addictions.

From 1981 until the time of his retirement in 1992, Charles was a member of the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, where he was an associate professor of practical theology.

Charles received Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Concordia Seminary.  In 1987 he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree at St. Louis University.  He is the author of the book The Twelve Steps: The Church’s Challenge and Opportunity.

Rev. Knippel married Donna Marie Niehaus in Lincoln, NE in 1954.  She preceded him in death Nov. 23, 2014. 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law: Anne Marie & Jerry Glassmeyer; a grandson: Gregory J. Bamert Jr and his wife Kacie, all of East Alton; and a brother-in-law: Daniel W. Niehaus of Lodi, CA.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Charles Andrew Knippel; and a brother-in-law: Donald L. Niehaus.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sun. July 29, 2018 at Paynic Home for Funerals.  There will also be a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 10:00 a.m. Mon. July 30, 2018 at Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City.  Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton.

Memorials may be made to Concordia Seminary, Hope Lutheran Church of Granite City or Messiah Lutheran Church of Alton.
