Steven Mainer

Steven V. Mainer, 56, died at 9:22 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville.  Born October 22, 1959 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Lowell V. and Dorothy (Lence) Mainer of Godfrey.  He graduated from Alton Senior High School and S.I.U. Edwardsville with a degree in Mass Communication.  Steve started his newspaper career early as a paper boy for the Alton Telegraph where he also did his internship.  After college he worked as a reporter and copy editor for papers in Corpus Christie, Orange, and Beaumont, Texas.  He later moved to Belleville to work for the Belleville News Democrat as an editor.  He was an avid runner and swimmer.  He loved to travel in his younger years especially to Maine and Florida.  Steve was baptized at the Godfrey Church of Christ at an early age.  Along with his parents he is survived by two brothers, Mark Mainer of Alton and Michael Mainer (Caron) of St. Peters, MO, four nephews and 2 nieces, and dear friend Donna Weeks.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernest and Gladys Lence of Cobden, IL, Rosetta and Ralph Brown of Jonesboro, IL and a niece Kristen Mainer.  Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.  Reverend James Lampley will officiate.  Memorials may be made to the Godfrey Church of Christ, American Heart Association, the 5A’s Animal Shelter in Alton or a memorial of one’s choice.  Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.  Online guestbook and information may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
