Sophia B. Ives, 93, passed away at 2:26 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2014 at her home surrounded by family. Born July 9, 1920 in New Haven, IL, she was the daughter of Raymond E. and Muriel G. (Johnson) Acord. She was a longtime member of Heartland Baptist Church in Alton where she taught Sunday school for 54 years. She worked as a teacher at Beverly Farm for 18 years and volunteered in the gift shop for 2 years. She also worked as a houseparent at the Carmi Baptist Children’s Home in Carmi, IL, wrote for the Democrat News of Jerseyville for 25 years, and worked in customer service at Alton Square Mall. She volunteered for several months at Anchorage, Alaska’s Baptist Family Service Center, and volunteered for 7 years at Alton Memorial Hospital in the Chaplain’s Office and in admitting. In 1936 she married Clinton Courtney in Alton. He preceded her in death. She later married Paul Ives Sr. on July 3, 1945 in East Alton. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1986. Surviving are seven children, Martha Prough of Glen Carbon, Clint Courtney (Mary) of Lebanon, IN, Paulette Hayden (Jim) of Godfrey, Hazel Morgan (Richard) of Godfrey, Margaret Freer (Mike) of Godfrey, Janice Miller of Granite City, and Paul L. Ives, Jr. (Dianne) of Columbia, IL, 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and a special caregiver/niece, Marilyn Acord of Cottage Hills. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Uribe, a grandson, David Freer, 3 brothers, Clyde Acord, Ralph Acord, and Ken Acord, and 4 sisters, Lillian Mayville, Hazel Chandler, Pearl Tretter, and Violet Littleston. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Heartland Baptist Church in Alton. Reverend Jim Grant will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heartland Baptist Church or Community Christmas. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
