Sister M. Raphaele Goebel

Sister M. Raphaele Goebel F.S.G.M., 55, baptized Jayne M. Goebel, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, died at 1:00 am Thursday, July 30, 2009 at St. Francis Convent Infirmary in Alton.

She was born June 11, 1954 in Covington, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Robert & Dorothy (Kerl) Goebel.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George on August 26, 1975, and professed her first vows on August 15, 1978. She professed her final vows on October 10, 1981, and celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 2000. Her missions included St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton from 1981-1986 in administration, St. Peter's Hospital and McCarrick Care Center in Somerset, New Jersey, from 1986-1990 in administration, St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton from 1990-1996 as manager of the Radiology Department, McCarrick High School in South Amboy, New Jersey, from 1997-2006 as a science teacher, and Alleman High School in Rock Island, Illinois, from 2006-2008 as a science teacher.

She is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Joyce Goebel of Taylor Mill, KY, Jean Miller of Latonia, KY, James Goebel of San Antonio, TX, John Goebel of Las Vegas, NV, Janet Cropper of Edgewood, KY, and Judith Tingley of Crescent Springs, KY; and a step mother, Rose Goebel of Covington, KY.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 3 pm until time of a prayer service at 7:30 pm Friday, July 31, 2009 at St. Francis Convent Chapel at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday August 1, 2009 at St. Frances Convent Chapel at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton with Father Daniel Mirabelli, CSV.

Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton.

Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
