Sister Grace Jokerst, whose given name was Inez Julia Jokerst, died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in Alton, Illinois, on February 9th. The daughter of Charles Joseph Jokerst and Mary Magdalen Schilly Jokerst, she was born May 11th, 1914, in Waco, Nebraska. Of her 10 siblings, four survive her: Dr. Herman Jokerst of St. Augustine, Florida, James Jokerst of Salina, Kansas, Irma Jokerst Gleason of Colorado Springs, and Colette Jokerst Hartley of Lexington, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by sisters Regina, Eileen, Alice, and Alta and brothers Carl, and Francis.
Sister Grace was educated by the Ursuline Sisters in York, Nebraska, and she entered the Ursuline Community in 1936, making her vows in 1939. She completed her B.A. in History in 1948, at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and her M.A. in Education in 1956, at St. Louis University. She taught on both elementary and secondary levels in Kirkwood, Arcadia, and Jennings, MO; Texarkana, TX; Alton and Decatur, IL, and Frontenac, MN. She also served on the staff of Cardinal Ritter Institute in St. Louis and as local treasurer in Frontenac, MN. She joined the Queen of Peace Retirement Community in Alton, IL, in 1998. Her favorite saying was, "Humor heals."
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 13, at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois. Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:30.
