Sister Catherine Harrison

Sister Catherine Harrison, AKA Sister Bartholomew, died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

The daughter of Margaret Mary Lane and Franklin Troy Harrison, she was born on June 17, 1915 in Houston, Texas.

Catherine entered first grade in Humble, TX, later attending Ursuline Academy in Dallas, TX and finishing elementary school in Liberty, TX. She received her secondary education at Ursuline Academy in San Antonio, TX. Upon graduating from the Academy, she entered the Ursuline Novitiate in Alton, Illinois, making her first vows on January 16, 1936. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education form Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, TX, and later a Master's Degree in Administration from the same College. Sister served the Ursulines and the Church as a teacher on elementary and secondary level, as supervisor of schools in Dallas, TX, Springfield, IL and Crystal City, MO, as a retreat house director in Frontenac, MN, in local community leadership in Galveston and Laredo, and in prison ministry in Dallas. In June of the year 2000, she retired and moved to the Alton Queen of Peace Community where she lived her final years with her well worn Bible in her lap, delighting everyone with her humor and her creative activity.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, John and Troy and two sisters, Margaret and Mary.

Sister gave her body to St. Louis University Medical School. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Sister Catherine's life on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Ursuline, Father Rudy Nowakowski, OMI, will preside.

Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center, 845 Danforth Street Alton, Illinois 62002.
