Sister Angela Murphy, AKA Patricia Arlene Murphy, died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois, on Monday, November 25, 2013.The daughter of Daniel Francis Murphy of Carver County, Minnesota and Isabella Lees Hayes of Skyler, Nebraska, she was born March 12, 1916, in Galveston, Texas. Her brother, Daniel Francis Murphy, Jr., preceded her in death.Sister Angela attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School in Galveston, Texas, and went on to receive her secondary education at Ursuline Academy in Galveston, graduating in 1933. She entered the Ursuline Novitiate in Alton, Illinois, in July of 1934 and made her vows in January of 1937. She received her BA from Xavier College and her Masters Degree in Library Science from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois. Her years of work in the Catholic Schools took her to Jennings and Arcadia, Missouri; Galveston, Texas; Springfield and Oak Park, Illinois; and Metairie, Louisiana. Her last ministry assignment was at the Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor until Hurricane Katrina brought her to the Queen of Peace Healthcare Center.Sister Angela gave her body to St. Louis University Medical School. A memorial Mass will celebrate her life at 10:30 am on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois.
