Shirley Schulze

Golden Eagle |

Shirley M. Schulze, 84, of Golden Eagle passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 18, 2023, at her home. She was born on March 3, 1939, in Indian Creek Hollow at Hamburg, Illinois in a small log cabin to William Harry and Margaret Marie “Mae” (Gress) Roach. Shirley was raised in Kampsville, IL by her mother and two uncles. She married Paul Albert Schulze February 6, 1960, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels, IL.

At the age of eight, she learned how to sew and cook and taught all her many skills to anyone willing to learn. Shirley truly believed through hard work and the courage to try you could do anything. She was Miss Calhoun County Apple Queen in 1956 and was very proud to have represented Calhoun County. Shirley graduated from Kitzmiller Beauty College in Alton. She was the owner and operator of Shirley’s Beauty Shop in Hardin and Golden Eagle. She also worked with her husband on the family farm and helped him run their business, Schulze Farms. She enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. One of her favorite activities was baking birthday cakes and sending birthday cards for every person she loved – which was many people. But her greatest joy was her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, who she loved above everything.

Shirley is survived by three sons and a daughter: Clark Schulze of Brownstown; Kent (Tammy) Schulze of Brussels; Thomas Schulze of Grafton, and Carmen Schulze-Simon of Brussels; grandchildren, Jodi (Eddie) Plummer; Brent (Christine) Schulze; Heather, Patrick, and Katherine Simon, and Delaney Schulze and fiancé Jacob Schumacher; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Kinsley Plummer; sisters-in-law, Edwina Meyer and Karen Schulze, brothers-in-law David (Beverly) Schulze and Robert Schulze, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill (Collette) Roach; her favorite uncles Jake and Lawarnce Gress; brothers-in-law Carl Schulze, Don Schulze and, Gilbert Meyer; sister-in-law, Janet Schulze; and nephew Tim Roach.
