Shirley Jean Knetzer

Shirley Jean Knetzer, 82, of East Alton, IL, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Sun. Dec. 28, 2014 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO with her family by her side.

She was born in East Alton on Sept. 25, 1932, the only child of Wilburn & Ella (Miller) Belangee.

She was married to the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Dale Knetzer on Feb. 27, 1954 in Alton, IL and he preceded her in death on Mar. 22, 2008.

She was a graduate of the 1953 class School of Nursing at Alton Memorial Hospital.  She shared her faith caring for patients at St. Anthony’s Hospital for over 40 years where she still volunteered once a week until her death.

She had 3 sons, Bill & Marleen Knetzer of Alton, Mark & Kathy Knetzer of Baltimore, MD and David & Elizabeth “Susie” Knetzer of Edwardsville, IL.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paul & Heather Knetzer, Matthew Knetzer, Christopher & Megan Knetzer and Brian Knetzer, great-grandchildren, Justin Addison & Wil Knetzer, sister-in-law, Betty (Graham) Knetzer and her daughters, Lisa & Ruth Graham and Rita (Graham) O’Brien and a very special cousin, Belva Martin of Bethalto, IL

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill & Betty Knetzer, a brother-in-law, John Graham and a niece, Mary Graham.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thurs. Jan. 1, 2015 at Paynic Home for Funerals.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Fri. Jan. 2, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Walther as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Foundation, P.O. Box 340, Alton, IL 62002.
