Shirley J. Mayes, 80, of Bethalto, IL, formerly of Granite City, IL passed away at 8:20 a.m. Tues. Sept. 25, 2018 at her home.
She was born Nov. 23, 1937 in Portageville, MO to the late Delois "Lois" (Wyninger) Ragsdale.
On June 2, 1956 she and Virgil Mayes were married in Poplar Bluff, MO. He preceded her in death Mar. 8, 1996.
Shirley worked for Taylon Zipper Co. in St. Louis and then for Nickels Net & Twine in Granite City, making fish nets, retiring in 1993 after 19 ½ years of service. In her retirement she worked as a bookkeeper for her daughter and son-in-law at Brad?s Flowers. She was a member of the Wood River Moose #263.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Carol Bowker of Panama City, FL and Lisa (John) Callison of Bethalto; 2 sons: James L. (Debra) Mayes of Benld, IL and Clyde Dale (Kathy) Mayes of Granite City, IL; 9 grandchildren: Crystal Mayes, Robert (Elizabeth) Henderson, Melanie Mayes, Natalie Mayes, Scott Mayes, Cole Callison, Leigha Callison, Bryan Bowker Sr. and Zachary Saggio; 14 great-grandchildren: Talen, Logan, Jordan, Hailey, Aryanna, Xavier, Breanna, Maddy, Macee, Bryan Jr., Lindsey, Erik, Madyline and Bradley; a brother-in-law: Fred Webb of Granite City; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her step-father: Everett Ragsdale; a son-in-law: Brad Bowker; a granddaughter: Torrie Henderson; a grandson: Carrington Saggio; a sister: Kathryn Webb; and her grandmother who helped raise her: Mary Wyninger.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of Moose Service and Funeral at 11:00 a.m. Sat. 9/29/18 at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights, IL.
