Shirley Goersch

Wood River |

Wood River—Shirley Ann Goersch, 78, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2016 at her home.

Born Jan. 4, 1938 in Brussels, Ill., she was a daughter of William and Edna (Bonner) Hanneken.

She married Charles Goersch Feb. 5, 1966 in St. Louis.  He survives.

Shirley worked as an LPN, and volunteered for Hospice of So. Illinois. She was proud to have volunteered for 18 years for Operation Blessing in Wood River.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Goersch of St. Charles, Mo.; two sisters, Doloris Humphrey of Ferguson, Mo. and Sandy (Joe) Romano of Godfrey; and four brothers, Ray (Shirley) Hanneken of Wood River, Jim Hanneken of Hardin, Pat (Maureen) Hanneken of Jerseyville, and Keith (Patty) Hanneken of Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Deverger.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River, where Father Donald Wolford will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14.  She will be laid to rest at Valhalla Gardens of Memory and Mausoleum in Belleville.

Memorials may be made to Operation Blessing or the Parkinson’s Foundation.  Special thanks to BJC Hospice for their extraordinary care, in particular Michelle, Sybil, and Marnie.
