Sheldon Harrison Yap, age 80, of Glen Carbon, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, surrounded by the love of his children.
Born on November 9, 1944, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sheldon was the cherished son of the late Charles T.T. and Eunice C. (Ching) Yap. From his earliest days, he embodied a quiet strength and a steadfast devotion to family and service.
On December 28, 1968, he married the love of his life, Judith A. Keller, at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in San Diego, CA. Together they built a life rich in love, faith, and adventure until Judith’s passing on February 11, 2025. Their 56-year marriage was a beautiful testament to their unwavering love and devotion.
Sheldon honorably served his country as a decorated veteran, retiring from the United States Navy in 1984 after twenty years of distinguished service. After his military career, Sheldon continued his career as a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin, where he retired on December 28, 2009, after twenty-seven years. He was a faithful member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon, a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and a man who lived his faith through action, kindness, and generosity.
Sheldon’s happiest moments were those spent with his family and closest friends, traveling the country, tending to his garden, and cherishing the quiet beauty of everyday life. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, proud grandfather, and a loyal friend whose presence brought warmth and steadiness to all who knew him. He was well known for his big smile and warm spirit.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Sheldon was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Hiona.
He leaves behind his children, Brian Yap of Albany, CA, and Heather (Stephen) Padon of Edwardsville, IL; his adored grandchildren, Harrison and Charlie Padon; as well as extended family and many dear friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
A private family graveside service will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL, to honor Sheldon’s life of love, service, and faith.
