Sharron Lindsey

Sharron A. Lindsey passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024. She was born to Isadore and Faye Appel on November 16, 1935, 9 minutes after her twin sister (and 12 years before her brother) in Chicago, IL.

Sharron had a passion for life and especially music. Some of her favorite memories included winning an art scholarship to the School of the Art Institute while in high school, studying flute with Ralph Johnson of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra while in college, selling an oil painting of a giraffe which she painted from a photograph at the San Diego Zoo, and meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt at the dedication for Roosevelt College to become Roosevelt University. (The anecdote is that one of the singers in the chorus was having trouble with her robe, and Mrs. Roosevelt turned to her and said “Surely, you will help her” and Sharron said “I’m not Shirley; I’m Sharron.” When she explained the comment, they both had a good laugh.) She also had the opportunity to study piano with Dr. Leon Burke and played with BPO Youth Orchestra.

She graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Processing and furthered her education by obtaining her Master’s in Business Education. She taught at Waterson College in Missouri and then did substitute teaching in Cahokia.

Aside from playing the flute, Sharron enjoyed oil painting when her hand wasn’t cramping as well as reading, often reading a book in a day and a half. Her other hobbies included playing computer Solitaire and traveling when she was able. Among places visited; Disney World, Disneyland, parasailing in Hawaii, Alcatraz, Mt. Rushmore. Holocaust Museum. White House, Space Needle, first helicopter ride in Juneau, whale watching in Santa Barbara, also other States. In Europe, kissed the Blarney Stone. Ireland, Northern Ireland, England (all the tourist sights), Wales, Scotland, Germany, Spain, France, Russia (only place they checked passports), Italy, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Denmark and others; Paraguay South America - the Iguazu Falls.

She was the owner of Sharron’s Bookkeeping and Tax Service. From 1976-1978 she worked as a tax preparer for Tax Town and Jim Trione. She also worked at Kresge’s in Chicago during high school (sales) and college; (general office: switchboard, inventory, etc.)

In 1976, she married David Louis, who was father of her two daughters, and then married Gene Lindsey in 1981.

Sharron was a member of the Milwaukee Community Orchestra, Parents Without Partners (newsletter editor); Independent Accountants of Illinois; American Businesswomen’s Association (newsletter, secretary, treasurer, and vice president); University City Symphony Orchestra, Director (recording secretary, corresponding secretary), Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra Director (9 years as youth orchestra coordinator, librarian, fund raiser; then secretary, treasurer, several committees etc.)

Surviving are her twin sister Shirley Sax, of Bloomington, IL; her brother, Leonard Appel of North Las Vegas, NV; her daughters Jeanette Hebb of North Las Vegas, and, JoAnn Schofield; son-in-law, Gary Chitwood; granddaughters, Jackie McClour of Santa Cruz, CA, Rachel Bray (James) Spezia of Hazelwood, MO, Hannah (Branden) Waters of Belleville, IL and Sarah (Jesse) Shaw of Denver, CO, And now her great grandchildren who Sharron loved beyond measure; Liam, Layla, Nora and Ryan Waters and Wolfie Spezia, and Lillian Shaw.

She was preceded in death, besides the usual parents, aunts, uncles and cousins, by Andrea Sax.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Sharron’s favorite charities: St. Jude’s Heart Fund, American Cancer Association, Children’s Hospital of St. Louis, University City Symphony Orchestra or Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sharron wanted to be cremated and her ashes put with her beloved husband, Gene.

Visitation: There will be a wake from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, IL.
