Sharon R. Sandidge, age 79 of Alton died at 3:48 PM on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born in Shawneetown, IL on November 18, 1938 the daughter of the late Dennis and Golda (Fuller) Whipple. She began her high school years in Jerseyville and graduated from Alton High School in 1956. Sharon was a fantastic baker and cook and was well known for her great fruitcakes. She loved her family and was involved with organizing her sons band concerts to help kids with cancer and be the cheerleading coach for the youth football team. Sharon retired in 1991 as the supervisor of operator services at AT&T after 35 years of service. She married Mayor Donald E. Sandidge on April 7, 1962 and he preceded her in death on February 17, 2013. Surviving are one daughter, Dene Sandidge of Alton and one son, Don E. Sandidge II (Leah) of Alton, three grandchildren, Chris Sullivan, Chandra Sandidge (fiance’ Billy Vester), Donetta Hailer (Ian), two great grandchlldren, Lynnox Hailer and Lola Vester, three sisters, Denny Dailey, Joy Whipple and Melody Lake (Wes) and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters, June Mouser, Judie Whipple, Genell Mills and Cynthia Whipple, one brother in law, Tom “Butch” Sandidge and one nephew, Blake Sandidge. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 28th at 12:00 Noon with Deacon William Kessler Officiating.
