Sharon Jean Powers, 72, passed away at 2:20 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Hardin.
She was born on September 16, 1951, in Carrollton, Illinois, and was the daughter of the late Walter and Phyllis (Melow) Varble.
Sharon grew up in the Greene and Jersey County area, and was a 1969 graduate of Jersey Community High School.
She married James D. Powers on April 16, 1977, at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. The first several years of their marriage were spent residing in Jerseyville, prior to settling in Bethalto, where they have remained for the past 32 years. Their 46 years of marriage was blessed with mutual respect and love for one another, and they were fortunate to have created many lasting memories together with their families.
Sharon enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles, sitting on her porch and feeding the squirrels, was an avid fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed following St. Louis Cardinal baseball.
Her faith was a very important part of her life, and she was actively involved with her church family at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Wood River for many years.
Surviving are her husband, Jim Powers of Bethalto; a son, William H. “Heath” Olive of Alton; two step-daughters and a son-in-law, Kit Stoecker of Delavan and Brandi (Timothy) Ramsey of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; as well as three sisters, Carol Evans, Barb Camerer and Nancy Lowder, all of Jerseyville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Matthew Powers.
Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Carrollton.
