Russell C. Gilman, 101, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
Born Jan. 11, 1909 in Scott County, Ill., he was the son of Charles and Emma (Albers) Gilman.
He married Dolly C. Suttner Jan. 10, 1931 in Owensville, Mo. She passed away Apr. 12, 2006.
A supervisor for Shell Oil Co. for many years, he also was a volunteer fireman for the Rosewood Heights Fire Dept. and a member of the Wood River Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and David Johnson of Asheville, N.C.; a grandson, Tedford O. Johnson and his wife Sarah; a sister-in-law, Clarice M. Laird of Wood River; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister, Edith Merris.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 26 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, with a prayer service to be held for the family at 3:30 p.m.
Father James Flach will celebrate a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River.
Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given for masses, to the American Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
