Rudolph John “Rudy” Diak, 88, of Edwardsville and formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.  He was born December 8, 1929 in Granite City, a son of the late Andrew and Helen (Kontros) Diak.  He married Josephine Suzanne “Josie” (Papp) Diak on April 19, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church in Granite City and she survives. 

He retired as a Master Staff Sergeant in 1989 after 26 years of dedicated law enforcement service with the Illinois State Police.  The United States Army veteran proudly served his country traveling to entertain the troops as an athlete playing baseball, softball, football and boxing.  He was a dedicated and faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Granite City where he served as  an elder.  He was a member of the Illinois Police Association and the AMVETS Post #204 in Madison.  He loved playing all sports throughout his life, bowled on many leagues and played cards at the Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time at his Lake of the Ozarks home with family and friends and cherished his days of fishing and boating.

In addition to his beloved wife of 66 years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Christie and Terry Conrad of Collinsville and Esther and Michael Green of Worden; a son, Rudy Diak Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters-in-law, Norma Diak of Granite City, Esther Devine of Maryville and Mary Ann Cowan of Ft. Meyers, Florida; many cousins; nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Donahue, Ann Morris and Helen Boshkoff and seven brothers, Steve, Joe, Andy, Frank, Leonard, George and Albert Diak.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Friday, August 17, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Visitation will continue at St. John Lutheran Church, 2001 St. Clair Avenue in Granite City on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Bill Hale officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.  Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church and may be accepted at the funeral home.  www.irwinchapel.com
