Roy “Bill” W. Combes Jr., 85, passed away at 12:42 am on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Villa Rose in Bethalto, with his family by his side.

He was born on April 21, 1927 in Collinsville, IL the son of Roy W. & Winiferd (Rafferty) Combes

He married Martha J. (Lindsay) on June 29, 1957 in East St. Louis, IL. She survives.

Bill served his country during WWII in the United States Navy.  He was employed at the National Marine as a mechanic, the Wisconsin barge Line as a port engineer, Altor Badge Line as a port engineer and then American Marine where he retired in 1993.  He was a member of the First Christian Church in Bethalto and the Wood River Masonic Lodge.  He enjoyed making everyone laugh, fishing and after retirement woodworking.  He loved to spend time with his family and friends, enjoying life and never meeting a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, one son and daughter-in-law, Dick & Debbie Combes of Bethalto; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie & Pastor Pat Heston of Bethalto; six grandchildren and their spouses, Lori & Brad Hasquin, Scott & Shanna Combes, Jenny & Josh Hunt, Ryan Heston, Shannon & Sarah Heston and Lindsay Heston and ten great grandchildren, Brody, Hadley, Jocelyn, Avari, Ryleigh, Gibson, Madelyn, Maddux, Taylor and Caden.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Erma (Childers) Combes who passed away December of 1954.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Funeral service will be at 10 am on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Bethalto with Pastor Pat Heston officiating.

Burial will be at Lake View Memory Gardens in Fairview Heights, IL.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice.
