Rose Mary Battershell, 98, passed away at 5:33 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2018 at University Nursing and Rehabilitation in Edwardsville.
Born Oct. 8, 1919 in Jacksonville, IL, she was a daughter of James and Ida (Hughes) Sweeney.
She married Leo F. Battershell Dec. 29, 1945 in East Alton. He preceded her in death Oct. 18, 2001.
Rose Mary and Leo both worked at Olin industries for over 30 years. She was cafeteria cashier and Leo was head of Security and personal driver for Mr. Olin. Rose Mary was civil minded, served for decades in voting/polling registration sites, donated her time to St. Anthony's Auxiliary Board, and the local blood bank. In later years, Rose Mary enjoyed being mascot to St. Joseph School of Nursing alumni, attending mass and special services, and traveling with the nurses on day trips.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Rosie also leaves a very special friend and neighbor of twenty plus years, Shirley Von Beheren.
Rose Mary generously gifted her body to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. There will be no services.
