Ronald Woelfel

Ronald Jerome Woelfel, 77, died peacefully at 2:35 p.m., Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton, after a period of declining health.

He was born in Batchtown on April 16, 1941, the youngest child born to George W. and Rose W. (Tepen) Woelfel.

He was raised in Jerseyville, and attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Grade School, and graduated in 1959 from Jersey Community High School. He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb on a football and baseball scholarship.

He began working at Olin for a short time, before accepting employment with General Telephone Company. He remained there his entire working career, and was instrumental in their conversion from the analog format to digital format. He retired in 1996 as an equipment operator. After retirement, he enjoyed his time and the opportunity to assist at Heneghan & Associates in Jerseyville.

He married the former Barbara Stocks on April 28, 1962 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together they shared 54 happy years together prior to her death on Sept. 26, 2016.

Surviving are his three sons and daughters in-law, Craig and Sarah Woelfel of Charlotte, NC, Gary and Mindy Woelfel of Jerseyville, Dan and Chris Woelfel of Columbia; six grandchildren, Ellie Winder and her husband Eric, of Decatur, Mary Grace Woelfel of Charlotte, NC, Holly Woelfel and her fiance' Adam Ausmus of Jerseyville, Brady Woelfel, a student at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Max Woelfel and Reese Woelfel both of Columbia; a great granddaughter, Emma Winder and a great grandchild expected in December; a brother and sister in-law, Richard and Marie Woelfel of Jerseyville; and a sister in-law, Dorothy Woelfel of Jerseyville.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister in-law, George and Theona "Spiv" Woelfel and Alfred Woelfel; a sister and brother in-law, Rosemary and William Simpson; a sister who died in childhood, Elizabeth Woelfel; and his father in-law and mother in-law, Pearl and Clara (Thien) Stocks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church inJerseyville, with Father Martin Smith officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
