Roger Barnes

Roger James Barnes died peacefully on August 25, 2018 in Alton, IL at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Roger is survived by his daughter and son in law, Alison Emily (Barnes) Williams and Richard of Morganton, NC and his granddaughter, Emily Lizabeth Williams of Morganton, NC. He is also survived by longtime friends and foster "sons" Thomas W. Onion of Crow Agency, MT and Roland Brown of Crow Agency, MT.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother and, Richard Kenyon and Dorenda Maud (Kenyon) Barnes of Billings, MT. He was also preceded in death by his sister Jennifer Ann Barnes of Alton, IL.

Roger was born on August 19, 1944 in Stockport, England. The family moved to the United States when he was a young boy. They then lived in New Jersey, Illinois and Montana. He graduated from Yankton College in Yankton, SD. After moving to Montana, he earned a counseling degree and teaching licensure from Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University-Billings). He worked for 30 years at St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana where he was the director of dormitories and was a "father" to many St. Labre students who lived in the dorms.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. September 1, 2018 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. Father Dennis Druggan, longtime friend from St. Labre Indian School, will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Roger's life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to St. Labre Indian School at 1000 Tongue River Rd Ashland, MT 59003.
