Roberta Y. “Bert” Goodman, 85, passed away at 4:27 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2017 at her daughter’s home.
Born July 5, 1932 in Greene County, IL, she was a daughter of Clyde C. and Leota I. (McCoy) Forbes.
She married Manuel “Bubby” Smith, and later married Wayne Goodman. Both preceded her in death.
Bert loved to play pool, and played on several different leagues locally for over 50 years. She also cooked and tended bar in the area for many years. She retired as a school bus driver for the Alton and Hartford/Wood River school districts. For a time she also cooked on river barges with her husband Wayne. She was a former member of the East Alton and South Roxana American Legion Auxiliary groups.
She is survived and will be missed by nine children, Sharon Smith of East Alton, Carolyn “Sue” (Michael) Peacher of Maryland, Barbara (Michael) Lawson of Alton, Billie Games of Springfield, IL, Dennis (Karen) Smith of Indiana, Douglas (Edna Murphy) Smith of South Carolina, Danny Smith of Wood River, Denise (Chris) Moore of Alabama, and Mary (Wayne) Schaaf of Cottage Hills; 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. She will also be missed by the patrons, employees, and owners of B&R Tavern, all of whom called her Mom or Granny.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Smith; 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and a great granddaughter; 3 sisters, Beltina “Betty Lou” Forbes, Carmelita Rita Johnson, and Marietta Henry; and her brother, Clyde Forbes.
Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 6 at Paynic Home for Funerals from 11 a.m. until services begin at 1 p.m.
Burial will follow at Short Cemetery in Cottage Hills.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bert’s daughters, Sharon Smith or Mary Schaaf, to assist with expenses.
