Robert A. Tompkins, age 88 of Pleasant Mound, passed away at home, Monday morning January 5, 2026.
Bob was born October 19, 1937, in Seminary Township of Fayette County, son of Claude and Helen (Reavis) Tompkins. In 1952, he moved with his parents to a farm in Pleasant Mound Township. He graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1955.
From 1952 to 1959, Bob and his brother Jake, with help from their younger brothers, toured the county fairs to show their Duroc and Berkshire hogs. In 1954, Bob entered into a farming partnership with his brother Jake when they started farming the J.L. Cheatham farm, which they later purchased. The operation consisted of raising hogs, cattle, and row crops.
Bob served in the Army from November 1960 until May 1961, and was in the Reserves until July of 1966. He and his brother Jake built their own homes and numerous other buildings on their farms and for their neighbors. Upon retirement, he continued working daily on the farm, especially with the cattle. Calving season was his favorite time of the year.
On May 2, 1964, Bob and Janice Devall were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Pleasant Mound, Illinois.
Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Maxey Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the Pleasant Mound Community Center or Lemuel Rhodes Cancer Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years; sons Bob (Pam) Tompkins, Jeff Tompkins, John (Tina) Tompkins, and daughter Jennifer (Byron) Jenne. Grandfather to Amy (Jared) Tebbe, Allen (Kayla) Tompkins, Harley Rensing, Breann (Matt) Wilkerson, Ross Tompkins, Brooke Tompkins, Emme Jenne, Sara Jenne, Anna Jenne, and Elbert Jenne. Great Grandfather to: Macy Tebbe, Jase Tebbe, Ada Tompkins, Dean Tompkins, Oliver Rensing, Boone Wilkerson, Mildred Rensing, Rosalie Guy, and Jack Tompkins. Also surviving are his brothers Donald “Jake” Tompkins, Neil “Newt” Tompkins, sister Maxine Stewart, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Helen (Reavis) Tompkins, and brother Maurice “Shorty” Tompkins.
