Robert “Slick” E. Gooch, 77, went to be with the Lord at 7:45 am Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Durham, North Carolina on March 4, 1938, the son of Herman and Martha Alda (Bridges) Gooch.
Robert married Judy (Bartels) Yehling on September 17, 1982 in Edwardsville. She survives.
He spent most of his life in Durham, North Carolina, moving to the Alton area in 1977. He worked at Owens Illinois in Godfrey in the machine shop until his retirement in 2000
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lori (Larry) Stutz of Godfrey, a son, Craig (Erin) Gooch of St. Louis, MO, a stepson, Rod Yehling of O’Fallon, IL and a stepdaughter, Pamela (Richard) Althardt of Pocahontas; five grandchildren, Evan Stutz, Abby Stutz, Chloe Gooch, Macie Althardt and Brenton Althardt; a brother, Carlton (Doris) Gooch of Durahm, NC; a sister-in-law, Barbara Gooch of Mt. Holly, NC; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Verlene (Arlyn) Schwalb and Alberta (Marvin) Ringering all of Edwardsville, Charles Kanning of Moro, Beverly (Kenny) Bivens of Greenville and Wilbert (Emma Jean) Bartels of Alton and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Thelma Odom, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman Nathaniel Gooch, Bervin and Nell Gooch and Janet Kanning.
A memorial visitation will be from 2 pm until services at 4 pm Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Martin Schultz officiating.
Inurnment will be later at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Charity of One’s Choice.
