Robert L. Austin, 75, died at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2016 at his home in Festus, MO. Born November 27, 1940 in Alton, he was the son of Anthony and Rena (Landon) Austin Sr. Mr. Austin worked in the mold repair department for Owens Illinois Glass for 28 ½ years before retiring from Saint-Gobin Containers in Pevely, MO. He had a life long love of antique cars that began as a little boy riding in his grandfather's Model A. In 1972 he became the proud owner of a 1930 Model A Ford, of which he still owns today, and spent three years restoring the car back to it's original factory condition. He was a member and past president of the Alton Antique Auto Association, the Model A Ford Club in St. Louis, the Show-Me Car Club in Festus, MO, and a member of the Moon International Car Club. On September 17, 1960 he married the former Nell Clowers at St. Patrick's Church in Alton. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Julie (Dereck) Cook of Godfrey, two grandsons,LCPL Andrew Cook, USMC and Alex Cook, a brother, David (Kathy) Austin of Collinsville, and four sisters, Marcella Waddell of Florida, Jean (George) Schenk of Godfrey, Rena Lanham of Alton, Ruth (Sam) Wellman of Overland Park, KS, a sister in law Shirley (Jim) Noble, and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Austin and Anthony Austin Jr.,and a sister, Margy McGovern. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016. Reverend Dennis Heck will officiate.
