Robert Fitzhugh

Robert “Bob” Lee Fitzhugh, age 86, of Mitchell, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois, surrounded by the love of his family. Bob was born on June 21, 1939, in Dover, Tennessee, the beloved son of the late Bertis Fitzhugh and Velma Marie (Grizzard) Jacobs.

Bob married the love of his life, Norma Dix, on December 14, 1957, in Paris, Tennessee, beginning a beautiful marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering love. Together they shared many cherished years until Norma’s passing on April 1, 2022. Their love and commitment to one another served as an inspiration to all who knew them.

A hardworking and dedicated man, Bob retired in 1999 from Granite City Steel, where he worked for many years as a switchman. He took great pride in providing for his family and was respected by coworkers and friends alike for his strong work ethic and kindhearted nature.

Bob found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed going to games with his family and friends. When not attending games, he watched the broadcast and never missed a game. And Bob enjoyed the annual deer hunt with three generations of family and friends.  He was an avid gardener and always had more than enough produce which he shared with family and friends. Bob took pride in his yard which he kept immaculate and reflected in the care of his home. Bob treasured time spent with his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose warmth and welcoming spirit touched countless lives. Bob never met a stranger, and his easy smile, caring heart, and genuine kindness will be remembered forever.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Bob was preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Robin (William) Long of Springfield, Illinois, and Lisa (Jeff) Imboden of Glen Carbon, Illinois; his dear sister, Naomi who was married to his best friend of 71 years (Jerry) Gray of Granite City, Illinois; his cherished grandchildren, Jason (Erin) Imboden, Vanessa (Brad) Bartle, and Chad (Emily) Imboden; and his adored great-grandchildren, Vance Imboden, Shiloh Imboden, and Jameson Imboden. Bob also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will deeply miss his presence in their lives.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., with funeral services beginning at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Eddie Bradley will officiate. Bob will be laid to rest beside his beloved Norma at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Bob’s family would like those who knew him to remember his gentle spirit, his love of family, and the kindness he shared so freely with everyone he met. His legacy of love, hard work, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
