Robert Schudel

Robert A. Schudel, 84, died at 1:39 p.m. Sunday, July17, 2016 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born May 5, 1932 in Jerseyville, he was the son of Everette V. and Alice L. (Rice) Schudel. Mr. Schudel graduated from Alton Senior High School and attended Missouri Valley College and Shurtleff College until he was drafted into the Army in 1953. He retired as a route salesman for Teamsters Local 525 after 32 years of service. Following retirement, he pursued his own home repair business. Mr. Schudel was a longtime, active member/servant of the Upper Alton Baptist Church. He volunteered on the Godfrey Fire Department for 29 years and was an Eagle Scout and an active leader in Boy Scouting for over 40 years. He became active with the Explore Post that specialized in Indian dancing called the Quatoga Society. He was a candle maker in the American Heritage Craft Guild and enjoyed wood carving, wood working and was a model train enthusiast. He played Santa Claus for 25 years appearing all over the community. On November 15, 1953 he married the former Joan Jenkins in Las Cruses, NM. She survives. Also surviving are seven daughters, Marti (Mark) Bramstedt of Yorkville, IL, Cindy (Kirby) Kirbach of Godfrey, Nancy Jn. Marie of Houston, TX, Sarah (Jim) Almeter of Godfrey, Ellen Byers of Plano, TX, Amy (Steven) DeLaval of Washington, IL, and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Kim) Alexander of Bothell, WA. Seventeen grandchildren, Nathan (Carol), Matthew (Sarah), Rob (Julie), David (Sally), Simone (Charles) Collette (Lauren), Jessica (Lance), Patrick (Tonya), Natalie, Jimmy (Elissa), Joe (Amber), Jennifer, Justin (Heather), Brandon (Kim), Lauren (Steve), Kimberlyn and Kelsey and 29 great grandchildren. Two brothers, Donald (Caroline) Schudel of Colorado Springs, CO, and Richard (Charlene) Schudel of Grafton. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kevin Byers, a grandchild and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the Upper Alton Baptist Church. Reverend Brad Donoho will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Upper Alton Baptists Church or the Godfrey Fire Protection District. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
