Robert A. Clark

Robert A. Clark, 84, died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, February 15, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born April 15, 1925 in Alton, he was the son of Walter S. and Bea (Yancey) Clark.

He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII with the 8th Air Force, 94th Bomber Group. He was a Navigator on a B-17 and flew 35 bombing missions in Europe. In 1949 he graduated from Purdue University where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and a member of the Purdue Alumni Association. He was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton, a member of the Alton VFW Post 1308 and a member of the Alton-Wood River Sportsman's Club. He worked for Owens Illinois Glass from 1949 until retiring in 1981 as a plant manager. In October 1950, in Elkhart, IN, he married the former Marcia Grace Hile. She preceded him in death on December 20, 1982.

Surviving is a daughter, Cynthia Ortman and her husband Brian of Yorktown, VA, two sons, David Clark and his wife Patricia of Auburn, CA and James Clark and his wife Janice of Chadds Ford, PA, five grandchildren; Erika Ortman and Kathryn Ortman both of Yorktown, VA, Ryan Clark of Napa, CA, Benjamin Clark and Peter Clark both of Chadds Ford, PA.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Brett Hendrickson will officiate.

Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.

Following the burial, a reception for family and friends will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Village. Memorials may be made to the 5A's Animal Shelter or the Purdue University Scholarship Fund at Dauch Alumni Center, 403 West Wood St., West Lafayette, IN 47907 or at www.purdue.edu
