Rita Short

Rita Jean Short, 64, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at SSM St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, Missouri.

Born on February 4, 1962, in Alton, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of the late Chuck and Ella (Wood) Darr.

Rita married Vic Short, and together their marriage was blessed with two children.She dedicated more than 30 years of her career to Shop 'N Save in Jerseyville, where she served in a variety of roles before retiring as a meat clerk. Throughout the years, she became a familiar face to countless customers and coworkers, earning friendships through her hard work and down-to-earth personality.

She found happiness in life's simple pleasures. Whether she was casting a line while fishing or simply sitting around, visiting and bullshitting with family and friends, Rita treasured the moments spent with the people she loved most. She had an easygoing spirit, enjoyed a good conversation, and created lasting memories through laughter and time shared together.

She is survived by her son, Thor Short of Fieldon; her daughter and son-in-law, Breann and Zach Slightom of Brighton; two grandsons, Zachariah and Kason Slightom; her siblings, Tom (Bertha) Slow of Roodhouse, Sarah Telega of Jerseyville, and Bobby Darr of Wisconsin. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Matt Darr; and her grandparents, Milton and Virginia Darr.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of Memorial Service at 3 p.m., Friday, August 7, 2026 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. 

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
