Richard D. “Red” Thompson, 92, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at 2:38 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at John Cochran Veterans Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born January 6, 1934, in Granite City, Illinois, a son of the late Montford “Monte” and Ruby (Holt) Thompson.
Red retired from Granite City Steel after many years of dedicated service as a steelworker. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows.
He had a true passion for music and found great joy in playing the guitar, singing and writing songs. Red loved life’s simple pleasures and never passed up a good meal, especially a barbeque surrounded by family and friends. Family gatherings brought him great happiness, and he cherished the time spent with those he loved most. He will be remembered for his warm spirit, love of music and the many memories he created with family and friends throughout the years.
He is survived by five children, Danny Thompson of Granite City, Timothy Thompson of Collinsville, Barry Thompson of Arizona, Jeff Thompson of Arizona and Diane (Brian) Crocker of Collinsville; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Aleta Mull of Kentucky and Linda (Paul) Wray of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; other extended family members; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret (Baize) Thompson; a daughter, Ruby Powell; two sons, Lester Thompson and Michael Thompson; and a great-grandson, Braden.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, IL., with the funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Brian Crocker officiating. Burial with full military rites will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
