Richard Johnson

Richard J. Johnson, 88, passed away at 8:09am on Friday, January 12, 2018, at Morningside of Godfrey.  He was born on March 5, 1929, in East Alton, the son of the late Edwin John and Ida Mae (Eyers) Johnson.  He married the former Lela Healey on November 28, 1953, in Jerseyville, and she survives.  Other survivors include his children and their spouses: Jane and Jerry Platto of Jerseyville, Eric and Lynne Johnson of Edwardsville, Laura and Dan Cloninger of Alton, eleven grandchildren: Audrey Bear and her husband: Zach, Allison Swan, April Sheppard and her husband: Adam, Matthew Platto and his wife: Katie, Aaron Johnson and his wife: Claire, Evan Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Elizabeth Mauer and her husband: Arthur, Annie Radcliff and her husband: Tony, Danielle McCann and her husband: Dustin, Andrew Cloninger and his wife: Lacy, eleven great grandchildren, one sister: Violet Clark of Wood River, two brothers and sisters in law: Leroy and Sandra Johnson of Prairietown, Floyd and Kitty Johnson of Rosewood Heights, many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Richard was formerly employed at Beall Tool in East Alton, the Sinclair Refinery where he worked in the lab, American Oil where he worked in the barrel house, and later at Illinois Power for twenty - seven years working as a lab tech.  Richard was a member of the First Baptist Church in East Alton.  He enjoyed working on cars.  He was a member of the Wood River VFW Post 2859.  He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Edith Welborn and an infant brother: Paul.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River.  Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the funeral home.  Pastor Homer Hanshaw will officiate.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the 5A’s and will be accepted at the funeral home.
