Richard Haxton

Richard Haxton, age 82 of rural Mulberry Grove, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family early Sunday morning, December 8, 2024, at home.

A celebration of life will be held later. Donnell–Wiegand Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements. Interment is private in Liberty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Richard was the son of Alexander Murdoch and Vivian Ione (Oakley) Haxton. He was born November 25, 1942, in Hillsboro, Illinois. Richard grew up in Hillsboro and the family moved to Mitchell, Illinois when he was 6 years old. Richard attended Sacred Heart and went through grade 10 and enlisted himself in the United States Army at age 15. He served for 5 years.

Richard and Carol Sue Lolly were united in marriage on April 15, 1966. They only had 15 years together, she passed away February 19, 1981, from cancer.

Richard owned and operated his own excavating company; Richards Excavating. He did lots of work in Madison County. Earlier in his life, Richard worked for the Wonder Bread Company in St. Louis. He used his talents and skill to keep all the bread machines in running order. He also did mechanical work for Mick’s Garage in Mitchell, Illinois.

A passionate man about excavating, Richard had many stories. He loved his family and spending time with them.

Richard is survived by his children: William Nelson Patterson (Catherine), Patricia Marie DePalma, Richard Alexander Haxton (Shelly), Danielle Deanne Guyot, Donna Marie Jones, and Shanna Renee Haxton-Liss. Loving grandfather of 19, great-grandfather of 28, and great-great grandfather of 4, siblings: Leroy Haxton of Edwardsville, Glenn Grieve of Granite City, Ronald Grieve of Alabama, Valentina Cardin (Ed) of Missouri, Cheryl Gauvin (Robert) of Massachusetts.

Preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol, sons David Kevin Patterson and Darren Michael Patterson, brother James Haxton and sister Roman Woodberry, as well as two granddaughters Sarah Elizabeth and Dawn Renee.
