Richard Carlos Hindelang, 62, died at 6:33 p.m. Saturday, December 25, 2010 at St. Louis University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 21, 1948 in White Hall, IL, he was the son of Margaret (Morrow) Hindelang of Alton and the late Charles H. Hindelang. He served in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam, from 1967 to 1970. He was awarded the Purple Heart. In 2001, He retired as Chief Operating Engineer for the Illinois Youth Center-Pere Marquette after 25 years. Apart from spending time with the love of his life, his wife Bonnie, and their daughter, Anna, one of his greatest pleasures was making maple syrup with his longtime friend, Fred Venardos. Since 1996, Richard, Fred and other family and friends operated Mason Hollow Maple Syrup in Grafton.
Richard and the former Bonnie Rister were married on May 14, 188, at Grafton Methodist Church. She survives. Along with his mother of Alton, and his wife and daughter of Grafton, he is survived by one brother, James Hindelang of Alton and two sisters, Sharley Hindelang and Mary Hindelang both of Alton.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
Private graveside services for family will be Thursday at Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hayner Public Library.
